Help Northern Colorado’s Homeless – Donate Winter Gear Today!
6 March, 2020Help Raintree Athletic Club in our collection of winter gear from Feb. 15th to Feb. 29th. We are working in conjunction with Homeless Gear, a Fort Collins-based non-profit that provides both help and a hand up to the homeless in Northern Colorado.
Donations can be made to our collection bin located in the main lobby, near the front doors. We are collecting high-demand winter apparel and accessories such as:
- Coats
- Thermals
- Gloves
- Hats
- Boots
- Hoodies & Sweatshirts
- Hand and foot warmers
“We tend to get an influx around the holidays — around November and December — and then those donations taper off as the holidays end. But the need is still great,” said David Rout, the Executive Director of Homeless Gear, “This is a time when we really struggle to get donations.”
Although the warm weather may seem like it will last into summer, most Coloradoans know that the weather can change in just a few days, so your donation is of utmost importance.
So where are these donations going? Mainly Fort Collins, but also all over the state!
Homeless Gear collects and distributes donations primarily right here in Fort Collins, but also partners with organizations around the state to make sure all the donated items go to use.
Homeless Centers such as the Murphy Center provide those in need with a “Gear Room,” where functional items like jackets and hats are given out. However, the Murphy Center also houses a “Career Closet” with interview clothing and professional attire, allowing community members to get back on their feet with a little bit of wardrobe assistance.
Other programs are dedicated to the children of struggling families and on-the-street outreach programs, in addition to various other programs providing education and counseling programs.
“Last year, we distributed about $1.2 million worth of product,” Rout said, “This helps people not only survive, but also escape homelessness. That seems like a really big number — and that is a big number — but most of our donations consist of one person donating one item at a time. But, when we have 1000 people donating items that’s huge.”
Make a difference on the way to your workout this week and donate your unused winter clothing. As a bonus incentive, Raintree will give out one FREE guest pass to those who donate to the cause — just talk to the front desk when you drop your donation.
Dig through your closet today. Find those items you never wear and bring them in. Help Raintree and Homeless Gear to offer “Hope and a hand up” for the homeless in our community. The drive ends February 29th.
